Will I still get a good ATAR if I don't pick high-scaling subjects?
Yes. Your ATAR depends far more on how well you perform relative to your cohort than on which subjects you pick. A strong, well-earned mark in a subject you enjoy and can commit to will typically outperform a mediocre mark in a "high-scaling" subject you're only taking for the label.
What is the ATAR?
The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that shows how you rank against every other HSC student in your state, not just your own school or subjects. An ATAR of 90.00, for example, means you've placed in the top 10% of the entire cohort.
What are scaled marks?
Universities need a fair way to compare a mark in one subject with a mark in a completely different subject. Scaling converts your raw HSC marks onto a common scale based on how strongly the whole group of students taking that subject performed, so your final rank reflects your position against a like-for-like cohort rather than the raw mark itself.
