Understanding scaling

Why your subject choices matter.

Scaling adjusts your raw marks based on how a subject's whole cohort performs. Here's what top-performing students know about choosing — and mastering — their subjects.

Pick subjects you'll excel in

Scaling rewards a strong relative performance, not the subject label. A high mark in something you enjoy and commit to will usually scale better than a mediocre mark in a "high-scaling" subject you're only enduring. Talk to a tutor about the right subject mix for you.

High-scaling subjects

Mathematics Extension 1 & 2, Chemistry, Physics, and Economics are typically among the highest-scaling HSC courses. We offer specialist tutoring for Chemistry, Physics, and Maths Extension 1.

Standard scaling

Subjects like English Advanced and Biology tend to scale close to 1:1. They're no less valuable — strong, consistent marks in them still add real weight to your aggregate. We tutor English Advanced and Biology too.

FAQ

ATAR calculator questions

Will I still get a good ATAR if I don't pick high-scaling subjects?

Yes. Your ATAR depends far more on how well you perform relative to your cohort than on which subjects you pick. A strong, well-earned mark in a subject you enjoy and can commit to will typically outperform a mediocre mark in a "high-scaling" subject you're only taking for the label.

What is the ATAR?

The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that shows how you rank against every other HSC student in your state, not just your own school or subjects. An ATAR of 90.00, for example, means you've placed in the top 10% of the entire cohort.

What are scaled marks?

Universities need a fair way to compare a mark in one subject with a mark in a completely different subject. Scaling converts your raw HSC marks onto a common scale based on how strongly the whole group of students taking that subject performed, so your final rank reflects your position against a like-for-like cohort rather than the raw mark itself.

How does scaling work?

Scaling ensures fair comparison across subjects. Your raw marks are adjusted based on subject difficulty, how many students take it, and your cohort's performance. Check our blog for detailed scaling breakdowns.

How accurate is this calculator?

This provides an estimate based on typical scaling patterns and should be used as a guide only. Actual scaling varies each year based on cohort performance.
