NSW HSC ATAR and scaling calculator

NESA moderation and UAC scaling are different steps. NESA moderates school-based assessment marks and preserves each school's rank order; for most courses, that moderated assessment mark is combined with the HSC examination mark to produce the HSC mark. Understanding scaling

How NESA moderation and UAC scaling connect.

Two organisations handle different parts of the result. NESA moderates school-based assessment marks for the HSC, while UAC scales HSC marks across courses before calculating the ATAR. Your subject choices matter, but strong performance within each course matters more than chasing a label.

Pick subjects you'll excel in

Scaling rewards a strong relative performance, not the subject label. A high mark in something you enjoy and commit to will usually scale better than a mediocre mark in a "high-scaling" subject you're only enduring. Talk to a tutor about the right subject mix for you.

High-scaling subjects

Mathematics Extension 2 scales highest of all, and Mathematics Extension 1, Chemistry, Physics and Economics all scale strongly, though the very top of the table is mostly small Latin and Extension language cohorts. We offer specialist tutoring for Chemistry, Physics, and Maths Extension 1.

Standard scaling

English Advanced scales solidly and Biology sits around the middle of the table. Both are worth taking well, because strong, consistent marks in them still add real weight to your aggregate. We tutor English Advanced and Biology too.

ATAR calculator questions

Will I still get a good ATAR if I don't pick high-scaling subjects?

Yes. Your ATAR depends far more on how well you perform relative to your cohort than on which subjects you pick. A strong, well-earned mark in a subject you enjoy and can commit to will typically outperform a mediocre mark in a "high-scaling" subject you're only taking for the label.

What is the ATAR?

The ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that shows how you rank against every other HSC student in your state, not just your own school or subjects. An ATAR of 90.00, for example, means you've placed in the top 10% of the entire cohort.

What are scaled marks?

UAC scaling converts HSC marks from different courses onto a common scale using the relative performance of each course cohort. The resulting scaled marks are used to build the aggregate behind your ATAR, rather than comparing raw marks directly.

How does scaling work?

UAC scaling is separate from NESA moderation. NESA moderates school-based assessment marks so schools can be compared while preserving student rank; UAC then uses HSC marks and course scaling statistics to calculate scaled marks and the ATAR.
