Not in the way there are for the HSC. The NSW Department of Education does not release the real Opportunity Class Placement Test papers after they are sat. What it publishes instead are three official practice tests, each with a Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills section, and each with an answer key and a full explanation of answers. Those three are the closest thing to an OC past paper that exists, and they are all linked above.

They are the current official papers, and they are what the Department publishes ahead of the next test, sat in 2027. Be careful with years here, because two different ones get used: the Department names each cycle by the year your child would start Year 5, so the cycle it calls 2028 is the test sat in 2027. Most parents search by the year the test is sat. Either way, the three practice tests above are the current set, and we recheck the links each time the Department moves them. Check the Department for the exact test date, which it confirms when applications open.

Yes. All three are published free by the Department of Education and every link on this page goes straight to the Department’s own copy. You do not need an account and there is nothing to pay.

Not exactly, and this is the part parents most often miss. The Department states that the PDF practice tests come from older paper-based versions of the test, so they do not reflect the current format. The OC test moved to computer-based testing in 2025: your child reads on screen, answers with a mouse or trackpad, works against an on-screen timer, and uses a split-pane layout for Reading. The PDFs are still worth doing for the question style and difficulty, but do not let them be the only preparation, because the mechanics on the day are different.

Yes, and your child should do it. The Department runs a short computer-based practice test that simulates the placement test and familiarises students with the software, so it is the closest look at the on-screen experience you can get before the day. It is free and needs no login: go to the official online practice test. It is deliberately brief, though: a format demonstration rather than a full paper, so it will not give your child sustained timed practice.

Three official practice tests is not many, and each one only works properly once. After your child has seen a paper it can never test them cold again. That is the gap our free OC practice test fills: five complete papers of original questions written to the same specification, sat on screen with the same timing, flagging and split-pane reading layout as the real thing, with a worked explanation for every question.

For your own child, yes. The Department publishes the PDFs for exactly that, though its stated terms limit use to personal, non-commercial purposes. Anything beyond that needs prior written permission from both the Department and Cambridge, so they are not yours to redistribute, sell or hand out as part of a paid course. Note too that printing them undoes the one thing the real test most depends on, which is working on screen, so treat printed papers as question practice rather than test practice.
