Mathematics Advanced
The main senior pathway for functions, trigonometry, calculus, financial mathematics and statistics.
Mathematics Extension 1
An additional course taken alongside Advanced, with deeper algebra, proof, vectors, calculus and combinatorics.

A student who needs help with multiplication facts needs a different lesson from a Year 10 student choosing an HSC pathway. These are the common turning points we look for before deciding what to practise next.
Years 3–6: secure number sense
Make place value, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals and written strategies dependable before gaps become harder to see.
Years 7–8: make algebra usable
Connect negative numbers, pronumerals, equations, ratios, indices and Pythagoras to the patterns students already understand.
Years 9–10: keep options open
Strengthen algebra, relationships, trigonometry, surds and deductive geometry before deciding which senior Maths course is realistic.
Years 11–12: turn methods into marks
Build course knowledge, interpret unfamiliar questions, show complete working and review errors before they repeat in the HSC exam.

Advanced and Extension 1 should be a considered choice.
Mathematics Advanced is the core senior course. It develops functions, trigonometry, calculus, financial mathematics and statistics, with the Year 12 course building directly on the Year 11 foundations. Start with the Year 11 Advanced course or move to the Year 12 Advanced course.
Extension 1 is studied alongside Advanced. It adds further functions and polynomials, inverse trigonometry, proof, vectors, further calculus, combinatorics and the binomial distribution. We can discuss fit after seeing a student’s algebra fluency and reasoning, rather than treating the course name as a promise about results. Students in Year 9 or 10 do not need to decide everything at once. Strong Stage 5 algebra, trigonometry and non-linear relationships keep senior options open, which is why the relevant Year 9 Maths and Year 10 Maths work matters.
