What OC preparation covers

Start with a printed diagnostic
Use a printed past paper to see how the student approaches Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills, including where time or reasoning starts to break down.
Review the work in detail
Go through every answer and piece of working carefully so the student understands the reasoning behind the correction, not just the result.
Identify the gaps
Separate reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking-skills gaps from pacing or question-selection issues so practice targets the real problem.
Break down missed problems
Explicitly model how to recognise and solve the missed problem types, using clear steps the student can apply to a new question.
Practise, then retest
Set targeted practice on the diagnosed gaps, then return to printed timed questions to check whether the method now holds under pressure.

What is the Opportunity Class Placement Test?
It is a computer-based test for Year 5 entry to an Opportunity Class. The three equally weighted multiple-choice sections are Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills. The test does not require a calculator, and the content draws on the NSW curriculum up to Year 4.
When do students sit the OC test?
Students sit the test during Year 4 as part of the process for Year 5 entry. That is why OC preparation is ordinarily aimed at Year 4 students, while Year 5 tutoring can continue to strengthen the underlying skills afterwards.

Where can families find official OC practice tests?
The NSW Department of Education provides official Opportunity Class practice tests, sample answers and explanations. We recommend using those materials alongside guided practice rather than relying on unofficial claims about the test.
How big are the classes?
