OC Results 2026: The Opportunity Class Reserve List Explained

On 9 September 2026 the NSW Department of Education released placement outcomes for the Opportunity Class Placement Test that Year 4 students sat in May, for Year 5 entry in 2027. If your dashboard shows an offer, a reserve list position or no offer, this guide explains what it means and which dates still matter.

The short version: there are five possible outcomes, and a reserve list place is a live status that can still become an offer until the end of Term 1 in 2028.

One warning first. The OC rules are close to the Year 7 selective rules but not identical: the band letters and the late-offer window differ (see the comparison table). Check any selective advice against the OC pages before you rely on it.

If you are reading ahead for a younger child rather than responding to this intake, our OC test preparation guide covers the Year 4 preparation stage for Year 5 entry.

Key Takeaways

  • OC results for Year 5 entry in 2027 were released on 9 September 2026 in the application dashboard at the Selective High School and Opportunity Class Online Centre.
  • There are five outcomes: an offer, reserve list only, an offer plus a reserve place at a higher choice, unsuccessful, and not applicable.
  • OC reserve bands run from A to E. Bands A to D estimate an offer by the end of September, October, November or December; band E means an offer is unlikely. None is a guarantee.
  • Offers from an OC reserve list can arrive until the end of Term 1 in Year 6: for this cohort, the end of Term 1 2028.
  • If you accept an offer and also sit on a higher choice reserve list, the reserve decision date is 3 December 2026 at 3:00 pm. After it, students holding accepted offers are removed from higher choice reserve lists.
  • Outcome appeals closed on 16 September 2026 at 11:59 pm. The Department does not accept late appeals.
  • The Year 7 selective process works differently. See selective school results and the reserve list explained.

Where Do OC Results Appear, and When Were They Released?

OC results are not posted or emailed. Parents log in to the application dashboard at the Selective High School and Opportunity Class Online Centre with the email address and password they applied with, and the outcome for each school choice is shown there. The Department’s key dates listed 9 September 2026 as the release date for the 2027 intake.

What Do the Five Opportunity Class Results Outcomes Mean?

The NSW Department of Education outcomes page lists five outcomes. Each applies to one school choice, not to your child as a whole. Our guide to OC schools near Blacktown lists the opportunity class schools in the area and the Year 5 places each offers.

OC outcomes, 9 September 2026
Five outcomes, five next steps
1. OfferA place in the opportunity class at the school shown.
Next step: accept or decline in the dashboard by the response due date shown. If you don't accept in time, the offer is lost.
2. Reserve list onlyA position on that school's reserve list (a ranked wait list).
Next step: nothing to submit. An offer may follow if your child's position is reached before all vacancies are filled.
3. Offer and higher choice reserve listAn offer at one school, plus a reserve place at a school you ranked higher.
Next step: you can keep both until 3 December 2026, 3:00 pm. See the decision flow below.
4. UnsuccessfulNo place at that chosen school this round.
Next step: talk to your local school about its high potential and gifted education programs.
5. Not applicableThat school was a lower choice than another school your child has been offered.
Next step: nothing for that school. Respond to the offer you hold.

What Does the Opportunity Class Reserve List Actually Mean?

The OC reserve list is a wait list for one school. When a family declines an offer there, the Department offers the place to the next eligible student on that school’s list. Your child’s position decides whether an offer arrives, and roughly when.

In the Department’s words, a reserve place means you “may get an offer later” if your child’s position is reached before all vacancies are filled. Nobody can know in advance how many families will decline, so a reserve place keeps your child in contention without promising anything.

How Do OC Reserve Bands A to E Work?

Next to a reserve position, the dashboard shows a band. The Department’s opportunity class reserve list bands page describes each band as an estimate of if and when a student might get an offer, based on how parents declined offers in the previous year. (Year 7 selective bands use a different scale; the comparison table further down sets the two side by side.)

Opportunity class reserve bands
When each band is estimated to get an offer
Estimates only, no guarantee. Each band reflects how families declined offers last year. The Department states there is no guarantee of an offer from a reserve list.
A
Likely to get an offer by the end of September.
B
Likely to get an offer by the end of October.
C
Likely to get an offer by the end of November.
D
Likely to get an offer by the end of December.
E
Unlikely to get an offer. If one does come, it would likely be after the start of the school year.

“Likely” is the Department’s word, and it sits beside its statement that there is no guarantee: this year’s families may decline more or fewer offers than last year’s. A later band also signals a longer wait, even if an offer does come.

How Late Can an OC Reserve List Offer Arrive?

Later than most families expect. A child can stay on an opportunity class reserve list and be placed up until the end of Term 1 in Year 6. For the 2027 intake, that means offers can continue until the end of Term 1 2028, should vacancies arise. An offer could arrive after your child has started Year 5, or early in Year 6, so keep your dashboard login working, your contact details current, and keep checking.

How Do OC Reserve Lists Differ From Selective Reserve Lists?

The two processes share a dashboard and a lot of vocabulary, which is why selective advice so often gets applied to OC results. The differences that matter for a reserve place are the band scale and how long offers keep coming.

Should You Accept an OC Offer While on a Higher Choice Reserve List?

The Department says you may accept the offer you hold and wait to see whether the higher choice reserve position is reached. You keep both until the reserve decision date, 3 December 2026 at 3:00 pm. After that, students holding accepted offers are removed from any higher choice reserve lists.

Offer plus higher choice reserve
The decision, step by step
  1. You hold an offer and a reserve place at a school you ranked higher.
  2. You may accept the offer and keep the reserve place. Both hold until 3 December 2026, 3:00 pm.
  3. Has the higher choice reserve position been reached by then?
  4. Yes
The higher choice offer appears in the dashboard for you to respond to.
No, so choose before the deadline
Keep the offer: your child is then removed from the higher choice reserve list.
Decline it: stay on the higher choice list, with no guarantee that list reaches your child.

No answer suits every family. Weigh the reserve band shown for the higher choice, the travel to each school, and how your child would feel about moving classes partway through Year 5 or into Year 6 if a late offer did come.

Can You Appeal an OC Outcome?

For this intake the window has closed. Appeals had to be lodged in the application dashboard by 16 September 2026 at 11:59 pm, which the Department notes is typically five business days after outcomes are released. No late appeals are accepted. For families planning ahead, here is what the Department will and won’t consider.

OC outcome appeals
What counts, and what doesn't
Expected: documentary evidence
  • a medical practitioner's report
  • evidence of unforeseen circumstances
Not grounds for an appeal
  • disappointment at not receiving an offer
  • a request to remark the test
  • results on practice tests
  • the student's age or lack of preparation
  • travel convenience, or wanting to attend with friends or siblings
  • matters already addressed through an illness or misadventure request

Valid appeals go to a panel of two principals of a selective high school or a school with an opportunity class, and a Director, Educational Leadership.

What Can Families Do If There Is No OC Offer?

An unsuccessful outcome closes the OC pathway for this intake, but it reflects one test, against one cohort, for a fixed number of places. The Department notes that opportunity classes are only some of the ways it supports high potential and gifted students, and encourages families to ask their local school about its programs.

The next formal milestone is usually the Year 7 selective test. Per the Department’s application process page, applications run from November to February while a child is in Year 5 and Year 6, with the test in early May of Year 6.

  2. From Nov 2027Selective applications, Year 5
  3. Early May, Year 6Selective test

So a child who sat the OC test in May 2026 applies from November 2027 for Year 7 entry in 2029. Our selective school application timeline walks through the stages, and OC test vs selective test explains how the two tests differ. There is no need to rush. Our free OC practice test and the OC past papers page are low-pressure ways to keep reading, reasoning and problem-solving skills ticking over.

Are OC Places Now Split Equally Between Girls and Boys?

Yes, from the 2027 intake. The Department’s fair access page says opportunity classes in public primary schools now offer an equal number of places to girls and boys.

An opportunity class with 15 Year 5 places
7 boys, 7 girls, 1 on merit
7 places for boys
7 places for girls
1 on academic merit, any gender
Source: NSW Department of Education, fair access in selective high schools and opportunity classes.

If places for one gender are not filled, they are offered to qualifying students of the other gender based on placement test performance. Families don’t need to do anything: from this intake onward, reserve list movement at a school is simply worked out within that model.

The Bottom Line

OC results day starts a process that runs until the end of Term 1 2028. An offer needs a response by its due date. A reserve place is real but uncertain, and the band (A to E) is a historical estimate, not a promise. If you hold an offer and a higher choice reserve place, plan around 3 December 2026 at 3:00 pm. No score, band or reserve position guarantees a placement, and no tutoring provider, including us, can promise one either. Our 30-day money-back guarantee is a refund policy that covers our classes only.

Frequently Asked Questions

When were OC results released in 2026?

Placement outcomes for the May 2026 Opportunity Class Placement Test, for Year 5 entry in 2027, were released on 9 September 2026. Parents see them by logging in to the application dashboard at the Selective High School and Opportunity Class Online Centre.

What does the opportunity class reserve list mean?

It is a wait list for a particular school. When a family declines an offer at that school, the offer goes to the next eligible student on its reserve list, so your child may receive an offer later if their position is reached before all vacancies are filled. It is not a guarantee of a place.

What do OC reserve bands A to E mean?

They are the Department's estimates of when an offer might arrive, based on how families declined offers the previous year. Bands A to D point to an offer by the end of September, October, November or December respectively, and band E means an offer is unlikely. The Department states that there is no guarantee for any band.

How late can an OC reserve list offer come?

A child can stay on an opportunity class reserve list and be placed up until the end of Term 1 in Year 6. For Year 5 entry in 2027, that means offers can continue until the end of Term 1 2028 if vacancies arise.

What is the OC reserve decision date for 2026?

For Year 5 entry in 2027 it is 3 December 2026 at 3:00 pm. If you have accepted an offer and are also on a reserve list for a higher choice school, your child is removed from the higher choice reserve list after that date unless you decline the offer beforehand.

Can I still appeal my child's OC result?

Not for this intake. Outcome appeals closed on 16 September 2026 at 11:59 pm and the Department does not accept late appeals. Appeals also need documentary evidence, such as a medical report or evidence of unforeseen circumstances; disappointment, practice test results or a remark request are not valid grounds.

My child missed out on OC. When can they sit the selective test?

Selective high school applications run from November to February while a child is in Year 5 and Year 6, with the test in early May of Year 6. A child who sat the OC test in May 2026 would apply from November 2027 for Year 7 entry in 2029.
