Use a printed past paper to see how the student approaches Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills, including where time or reasoning starts to break down.
Review the work in detail
Go through every answer and piece of working carefully so the student understands the reasoning behind the correction, not just the result.
Identify the gaps
Separate reading, mathematical reasoning and thinking-skills gaps from pacing or question-selection issues so practice targets the real problem.

What the OC test involves
The Opportunity Class Placement Test decides places in Year 5 opportunity classes. Students apply in the November to February of Year 3 or Year 4 and sit the test in Year 4. The NSW Department of Education describes three multiple-choice sections, each worth a third of the result: Reading (14 questions in 40 minutes, three of them with several parts), Mathematical Reasoning (35 questions in 40 minutes) and Thinking Skills (30 questions in 30 minutes). The questions draw on the NSW curriculum up to Year 4, and no calculator is allowed.

How an OC coaching class runs
Classes stay between 1 and 5 students and are taught in person at our Blacktown centre, not online. Each week follows the practice cycle above. Because the real test is on screen, students also practise the format on our free online OC practice test. OC or Selective?
The OC test is for Year 5 entry and has three sections. The Selective test is sat in Year 6 for Year 7 entry and adds a Writing task. OC classes near Blacktown
Five public primary schools in the City of Blacktown run opportunity classes, including Doonside Public School, which began hosting one in 2026. Further out, Ironbark Ridge in Rouse Hill and Blaxcell Street in Granville each went from 30 Year 5 places to 15.
