Selective test question types

These original papers help Year 6 students practise for NSW Year 7 selective school entry. Explore the question families in our free online Selective practice tests below.

Reading: meaning, language and connections

Compare paired extracts, interpret poetry and match statements to short texts. Missing-word tasks test vocabulary in context; missing-sentence tasks ask how ideas fit together. Look for evidence in the text, including what a writer implies rather than states directly.

Mathematical Reasoning: choose a method, then calculate

Work through number problems, fractions and money, measurement, shapes, data and probability, and patterns. Many tasks need several steps. Write down intermediate results and check that your answer meets every condition, rather than stopping after the first calculation.

Thinking Skills: arguments, rules and puzzles

Judge whether evidence supports a claim, spot a gap in reasoning and combine clues in deduction puzzles. Other tasks involve rules, spatial reasoning and time or rates. Our Thinking Skills guide explains ways to approach these problems.

Writing: respond to a purpose and audience

Our prompts include newspaper reports, diary entries and an advice leaflet. Develop ideas that answer the particular brief, then review organisation and language. Writing is not marked automatically; download the response and review checklist for feedback.

For a practice plan, read when to start Selective preparation. Our Selective scores guide explains official results.

Is this the official Selective test?

These are original Lux Tuition papers for Year 6 students preparing for NSW Year 7 selective entry. Start with the Department’s official samples for format, difficulty and its software, then use these papers for further practice.

Can my child practise without a timer?

Yes. Choose timed or untimed practice before starting. In timed mode, the clock keeps running when you leave the page. Calculators and dictionaries are not permitted in the official test; paper is useful for working out.

How is Writing marked?

Writing is not marked automatically. Download the response and review checklist for feedback from a tutor or AI marker.
