OC Schools Near Blacktown: The 2027 Opportunity Class List
0%

Five public primary schools in the City of Blacktown run opportunity classes: Blacktown South, Blacktown West, Colyton (in Mount Druitt), Doonside and Quakers Hill. Between them they offer 90 Year 5 OC places for 2027. Widen the search to the Central City District, the four council areas the NSW Government groups with Blacktown, and there are 13 OC schools with 270 of the 1,840 Year 5 places in NSW. That district covers a wide area, so look up each school on a map and check the trip yourself.

Every school, suburb and number on this page comes from the NSW Department of Education. We haven’t ranked or rated any school (the Department’s places list is not a ranking), and the right school is the one that suits your child and your family’s week. What we have done is pull the official list into one place for Blacktown families, show what changed in 2026, and set out the dates that matter for the next round of applications.

For the preparation side of that decision, our OC test preparation guide for Year 4 parents explains the three skill areas, available resources and how to interpret feedback.

Key Takeaways

  • Five opportunity class (OC) schools are in the City of Blacktown itself, with 90 Year 5 places for 2027. The wider Central City District (Blacktown, Cumberland, Parramatta and The Hills council areas) has 13 OC schools and 270 places, but the district covers a wide area, so check each school’s location yourself.
  • Most of these schools take 15 Year 5 students into one composite Year 5/6 class. Quakers Hill, Greystanes, North Rocks, Dural and Matthew Pearce take 30.
  • From Term 1 2026, Doonside and Guildford West gained new composite OC classes, while Ironbark Ridge and Blaxcell Street went from 30 to 15 Year 5 places. The NSW total stayed at 1,840.
  • Offers depend on test performance and the order of your school choices. You can list up to four schools, and listing a school first gives no advantage.
  • For Year 5 entry in 2027, the test was held on 8–9 May 2026 and outcomes came out on 9 September 2026. If you hold an offer and a higher choice reserve place, the reserve decision date is 3 December 2026 at 3:00 pm (see OC results and the reserve list explained).
  • Dates for Year 5 entry in 2028 have not been published as of 10 October 2026. The Department describes the application window as November to February.

Which OC Schools Are Near Blacktown?

The five OC schools inside the City of Blacktown council area come first in the table below. After them, the table follows a fixed rule rather than distance: it lists every OC school that the Department’s school dataset places in the Central City District, the group of four council areas (the City of Blacktown, Cumberland, the City of Parramatta and The Hills Shire) that the NSW Government plans together. It is a published boundary that covers a wide area, and the Western City District schools (listed further down) sit outside it. Look up each school’s location on a map and check the travel to it yourself. Treat the table as a list to check, not a list of schools near you.

The full NSW list, with a map and each school’s website, is on the Department’s opportunity classes page. Every school in this table is a public primary school, and the Department says these schools don’t charge attendance fees, although they may ask for payments for things like resources, excursions and sport. You can apply to OC schools outside your local enrolment area.

How Many Year 5 Places Does Each Opportunity Class School Near Blacktown Offer?

Each school’s intake is either 15 or 30 Year 5 places. The Department explains what that means for classes:

  • 15 places: one composite class, with 15 Year 5 and 15 Year 6 students together.
  • 30 places: two classes, either one Year 5 class and one Year 6 class, or two composite classes. The Department suggests checking with the school to confirm which.

Added up by council area, the City of Blacktown has the most OC places of the four, mainly because it has the most OC schools.

What Changed for OC Schools Near Blacktown in 2026?

In 2026 the Department moved OC places between four schools in this area, and its current opportunity class list now shows all four with 15 Year 5 places. From Term 1 2026, Doonside and Guildford West each gained a composite Year 5/6 opportunity class, and Ironbark Ridge and Blaxcell Street each dropped from 30 to 15 Year 5 places a year.

Two details matter for families. The Department said there would be no impact on students already in, or starting in 2025 in, the opportunity classes at Ironbark Ridge and Blaxcell Street, so nobody had to move. And because these are composite classes, a Year 5 student at Doonside or Guildford West shares the room with that school’s Year 6 OC students.

Which Other Opportunity Class Schools Are in Western Sydney?

If you are willing to look further afield, the Department’s list has 18 more OC schools in the eight council areas of the NSW Government’s Western City District. Together they offer 285 Year 5 places in 2027.

How Does OC Placement Work?

An OC place is decided by the Opportunity Class Placement Test and the order of the schools on your application. The Department’s choosing your schools page sets out how offers work, and it comes down to five steps.

From application to offer
How an OC place is decided
  1. Apply and list up to four schools in your order of preference, in Year 3 or early Year 4.
  2. Sit the computer-based placement test in May of Year 4. You can still change your school choices until a set date after the test (5 June in the 2027 round).
  3. Each school's offer level is set by demand: how many students apply, how they perform and how many places the school has. Your child is considered for every choice on test performance alone.
  4. One initial offer, in September: from the highest-listed school whose level your child meets.
  5. Reserve lists can bring a later offer from a higher choice if places open up.
The OC placement process, paraphrased from the NSW Department of Education's application process and "Choosing your schools" pages.

Two newer rules also shape who gets a place. From the 2027 intake, the Department’s fair access policy gives girls and boys an equal number of OC places. In a class with 15 Year 5 places, that means 7 for girls, 7 for boys and 1 on merit regardless of gender, and unfilled places go to qualifying students of the other gender. Separately, under the Equity Placement Model, up to 20% of places at each school are held for students from under-represented groups. Entry is still based on the placement test.

When Do OC Applications Open for 2028 Entry?

Not yet announced. As of 10 October 2026, the Department’s key dates show only the round for Year 5 entry in 2027, and the online application centre has no 2028-entry dates either. The Department describes the OC application stage as running from November to February. As a past example only, applications for 2026 placement were open from 7 November 2024 to 21 February 2025. Treat that as a pattern, not a promise, and check the Department’s page before you plan around it.

The 2028 round is for children who are in Year 3 now. The Department says students usually apply at the end of Year 3 or the start of Year 4, and sit the test in Year 4.

How Should You Choose OC Schools Near Blacktown?

The Department’s own advice is practical, and it’s worth following closely:

  • Order matters. You receive one initial offer, from the highest-listed school whose level your child meets. You can’t decline it to get an offer from a school lower on your list.
  • Listing a school first gives no advantage. Your child is considered for every school on test performance alone, so put the school you want most at the top.
  • Only list schools your child would actually attend. Fewer than four is fine.
  • Location matters. The Department notes that a school close to home means less travel time, which can help wellbeing and leaves room for sport and music.
  • Siblings aren’t guaranteed a place. Each child needs to meet the test requirements, and a younger sibling isn’t guaranteed a regular place at the same school unless you live in its intake area.
  • An OC place doesn’t give automatic entry to a selective high school. You apply again in Year 5 for Year 7. Our OC test vs selective test comparison explains how the two pathways differ, and our guide to selective schools in NSW lists every selective high school and its Year 7 places.

Visit the schools on your shortlist, read their websites and talk with your child. A 15-place school runs a single composite class, while a 30-place school has two classes, so ask how theirs are organised.

Preparing for the OC Test From Blacktown

The Department says students need only a small amount of preparation for the placement test and don’t need coaching, and its free practice tests are the best place to start. We’ve gathered those official tests, with answer keys, on our OC past papers page, and our free online OC practice test lets your child try Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills on screen.

If you’d like structured support, our Opportunity Class preparation classes in Blacktown build the reading, maths and reasoning skills the test draws on, in small classes of one to five students, taught by tutors averaging 97.1 ATAR, minutes from Blacktown Station. No tutor or tutoring centre, including us, can promise an OC place. Check our pricing page for current rates, or book a free trial with no obligation.

The Bottom Line

Five OC schools are in the City of Blacktown, with 90 Year 5 places in 2027. The wider Central City District adds eight more in Cumberland, Parramatta and The Hills (270 places in all), and another 18 schools sit across the rest of Western Sydney. Doonside and Guildford West are the newest, while Ironbark Ridge and Blaxcell Street now take 15 students a year instead of 30. The next application round should open in the November-to-February window, but its dates aren’t published yet. Build your list around your child and your week, put your real first choice first, and keep checking the Department’s key dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which OC schools are in Blacktown?

Five OC schools are in the City of Blacktown council area: Blacktown South, Blacktown West, Colyton (Mount Druitt), Doonside and Quakers Hill public schools. Quakers Hill takes 30 Year 5 students in 2027 and the other four take 15 each, according to the NSW Department of Education.

Is Doonside Public School an opportunity class school?

Yes. Doonside Public School opened a composite Year 5/6 opportunity class in Term 1 2026 and offers 15 Year 5 places in 2027. Guildford West Public School gained a composite OC class at the same time.

How many opportunity class schools are there in NSW?

The Department lists 89 opportunity classes: 88 public schools plus Aurora College, which runs online classes for rural and remote students. Together they offer 1,840 Year 5 places. Glenbrook Public School has no Year 5 intake in 2027 because it alternates years with Blaxland East.

When do OC applications open for 2028 entry?

The dates have not been published as of 10 October 2026. The Department describes the application window as November to February, and applications for 2026 placement ran from 7 November 2024 to 21 February 2025, but that is a past pattern, not a confirmed date. Check the key dates page before you plan.

How many OC schools can I put on my application?

Between one and four, listed in your order of preference. Only list schools your child would attend, because you can't decline an offer to get one from a school lower on your list.

Does putting an OC school first improve my child's chances there?

No. The Department considers your child for every school on your list using test performance alone, and gives no extra consideration for a first choice. The order only decides which school's offer you receive if your child meets the level for more than one.
